The Kondhwa police disclosed on Wednesday that Anwar Rahim Shaikh, a known criminal with a criminal record and an associate of the late Feroz Bangali gang, was fatally shot as an apparent act of retribution for the murder of gangster Wasim Rafique Shaikh, also known as Khada Wasim, in the year 2011.
Shaikh and His Wife Ambushed, Attacked, and Fatally Shot
In a grim scenario, Shaikh and his wife Parveen (47) were driving a Santro car when they were intercepted by assailants in another vehicle as well as on a motorcycle.
The assailants forcibly pulled Shaikh from the vehicle, assaulted him using weapons, and fled the scene after firing shots.
Tragically, Shaikh succumbed to his injuries on the spot before medical assistance could be administered.
Criminal History Uncovered
Shaikh, aged 47, was no stranger to law enforcement, with a criminal history spanning several decades. He was linked to 27 cases registered across various police stations in the city from 1978 to 2011.
Although he had secured acquittals in certain cases, others remained pending in the judicial system.
Following Khada Wasim’s murder, Shaikh had evaded authorities but subsequently obtained interim anticipatory bail from the district and sessions court.
Police Suspect Rivalry Behind the Killing
Authorities are currently delving into potential rivalries and connections between Shaikh and other criminals to ascertain the precise motive behind the murder.
The police suspect that members of a rival faction associated with the late Khada Wasim gang may have orchestrated the killing.
As the investigation unfolds, a live bullet and two expended cartridges were recovered from the scene.
Details Emerge From Investigation at Scene
An on-site investigation revealed significant clues. The car’s windshield and windows had sustained damage from projectiles.
Bloodstains were evident on the front seats. Two sizable bloodied stones were discovered beneath the vehicle. The car bore a press sticker at its front and rear.
Police seized an identity card from a local weekly newspaper in the name of the victim, as well as his cellphone.
Anwar Badruddin Shaikh Arrested; Hunt for Remaining Suspects
Anwar Badruddin Shaikh (50), a resident of Kondhwa, was apprehended based on a complaint lodged by Shaikh’s wife. He faces charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.
Meanwhile, an active manhunt is underway to locate and question the remaining suspects, including Matin Shaikh, Nazir Sayyed (the alleged shooter), Rafique Shaikh, Mohsin Shaikh, Imran Shaikh, Shanawaz Shaikh, Atul Pawar, Munir Sayyed, Zubair Shaikh, and Tousif Shaikh.
Background on Khada Wasim’s Death and Implicated Suspects
The late Khada Wasim, a criminal with his own record, was subjected to a brutal attack and killed by a group of approximately 12 individuals at Kate chawl in Kondhwa on May 15, 2011.
The Haveli police subsequently filed a chargesheet against ten suspects. Anwar Rahim Shaikh and his brother Rafique alias P Abdul Rahim Shaikh were identified as absconding suspects in the case.
This unfolding narrative underscores the intricate webs of criminal activity and retaliation within gang circles, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in maintaining public safety and order.
