Pune, October 2, 2019

Amid the swift dissemination of news regarding the release of gangster Nilesh Ghaiwal from Yerwada Central Jail, Pune’s law enforcement promptly responded by issuing an order for him to vacate the city.

Release and Background

Ghaiwal and his cohorts had been incarcerated in connection with a dacoity case registered in 2017 at the Koregaon Park police station.

The complaint was lodged by Corporator Vivek Yadav. Additionally, Ghaiwal faced charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Recently, the Bombay High Court granted him bail, leading to his release from custody on Wednesday.

Preventive Measures Ahead of Elections

Bachchan Singh, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), highlighted the proactive measures being taken in light of the upcoming elections.

He stated that the Crime Branch, in conjunction with various police stations, is closely monitoring individuals with criminal records.

Nilesh Ghaiwal’s release was subject to a notice under Section 144(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), issued by DCP (Zone 3), effectively barring him from entering Pune for one month.

Section 144 and its Implications

Section 144 of the CrPC provides authorities with the power to issue orders in cases of imminent danger or urgent nuisance.

The ex parte nature of the order enables swift action even when notifying the affected parties may not be feasible due to the circumstances.

Ghaiwal’s Criminal Record

According to the records maintained by Pune police, Nilesh Ghaiwal leads a gang notorious for its involvement in cases of murder and robbery.

The gang is known to operate in Kothrud and the surrounding areas.

The enforcement of the order against Nilesh Ghaiwal underscores the police’s commitment to maintaining public safety and preventing potential disturbances.

Confrontation and Injuries

An intense encounter in Baroda, Gujarat, on Wednesday night left two police officers from Pune city police crime branch and an accomplice of gangster Gajanan Marne injured.

The injured individuals include Assistant Police Inspector Ranjit Bhoite, Constable Dilip More, and the gang member Sagar Rajput.

They are currently receiving medical treatment at Global Hospital in Baroda. Bhoite sustained leg injuries, while More has injuries to his back.

Response and Investigation

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) P R Patil has already departed from Pune for Baroda on Thursday to oversee the aftermath of the incident.

The Confrontation

According to police reports, the exchange of gunfire occurred near Nehru Bhavan.

Sagar Rajput, a wanted criminal from Pune, had been hiding in Mahakali Sevusal Lane near Nehru Bhavan. Pune police had been actively searching for Rajput and managed to identify his location.

Without assistance from local police, they launched a raid on Wednesday night. During the operation, Rajput opened fire on the police, injuring both Bhoite and More.

In response, the police fired back, injuring Rajput and eventually apprehending him.

Criminal Background and Gang Conflicts

Authorities revealed that Rajput had previously evaded capture on December 10, 2014, in Navi Mumbai.

This incident occurred during the time when gangster Marne and his nephew Rupesh were at large after the murder of a rival gang member.

The clashes between the two gangs have a history of violence.

On November 3, 2014, Marne and his associates murdered Santosh alias Pappu Hiraman Gavde, a member of the rival Nilesh Ghaiwal gang, in Lavale.

Gavde was a key witness in a case involving the 2008 firing on Ghaiwal and Gavde by the Marne gang in Kothrud.

The violence continued on November 29, 2014, with a shootout outside Vaikunth Crematorium resulting in a death and multiple injuries.

Government Response and Crackdown

In response to the escalating gang conflicts, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed Pune police to address the violence decisively.

As a result, numerous gang members have been arrested in recent times. Many of these gangsters and their associates are currently incarcerated in various jails across the state.

The encounter in Baroda highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to curb gang-related violence and ensure public safety.
