Pune city’s law enforcement has taken a significant step by invoking the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Avinash, also known as Sunny Gupta (20), and his accomplices – a group comprising 11 gang members, including a minor.

The charges stem from a daring incident where the gang opened fire and conducted a robbery at the office of an Angadia (a private courier service system) situated in the Market Yard area in November of the preceding year.

Robbery Unleashed

In the course of events on November 12 around 11:30 am, Sunny Gupta and his associates executed a meticulously planned robbery operation.

Armed with a combination of sharp-edged weapons and a pistol, the gang forcefully entered the premises of “P M Courier,” located within the Ganraj Market in the Market Yard area.

The audacious act commenced with one of the perpetrators discharging a firearm, setting the stage for a brazen robbery.

The assailants managed to make off with a substantial sum of Rs 27.45 lakh in cash, alongside two mobile phones.

Legal Action and Charges

An official complaint was swiftly registered at the Market Yard police station. The charges leveled included sections 395, 397, and 120 B of the Indian Penal Code, in addition to relevant sections of the Indian Arms Act, highlighting the severity of the crime.

Criminal Network and Apprehensions

The investigation led to the apprehension of Sunny Gupta, hailing from Mangalwar Peth, along with eight fellow conspirators, among whom was Aditya Ashok Marne (28), a history sheeter with prior criminal involvements, resident in Warje.

Notably, the group also featured a minor who was implicated in the crime and subsequently detained. However, three individuals involved in the incident remain at large, evading law enforcement efforts.

MCOCA Implication and Investigation

The criminal undertakings of Sunny Gupta and his associates were marked by a pattern of organized criminal activities.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, a proposal to invoke MCOCA against the group was advanced by Senior Police Inspector Anagha Deshpane.

Additional Commissioner of Police Ranjankumar Sharma reviewed and approved the proposal, leading to the incorporation of relevant sections of MCOCA into the charges against the accused in the robbery case.

The ongoing investigation is being overseen by Assistant Commissioner of Police Pournima Taware.
