Pune, 18 August 2020

A lingering tussle ensues between notorious gangster Bapu Nair and Sassoon General Hospitals regarding the possibility of conducting a laparoscopic hernia surgery.

Gangster Bapu Nair’s Legal Bid for Hernia Surgery

Bapu Nair, who has been incarcerated in Yerawada Central Prison since May 2016, has once again taken his case to the special court (MCOC Act).

In his plea, he alleges that despite court orders, Sassoon management neither performed his laparoscopic surgery nor provided adequate treatment, leading to his midnight discharge and subsequent mental distress.

Court Seek Explanation

Responding to Nair’s plea, the special court has issued a directive to Sassoon General Hospitals, demanding a comprehensive report on Nair’s treatment and surgery details.

Gangster Nair’s Criminal Record and Incarceration

Nair is infamous for his involvement in 15 serious criminal cases, including charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, and dacoity.

Pune police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against him.

His arrest on May 7, 2016, led to his confinement in Yerawada Central Prison.

Gangster’s Struggle for Hernia Treatment

Having experienced hernia discomfort for the past year, Nair submitted multiple applications to the court requesting the necessary surgery.

However, despite court orders, neither the Sassoon General Hospitals nor the prison administration took any proactive measures. Nair’s efforts culminated in an October 2019 application seeking treatment in a private hospital, specifically laparoscopic surgery, which was not available at Sassoon.

The hospital contested this, claiming the availability of laparoscopic surgery. A court directive in line with this led to Nair’s referral to Sassoon for the procedure. Yet, both the jail authorities and Sassoon failed to adhere to the court’s order.

Renewed Appeal Amidst Continued Struggles

In a recent application filed through his lawyer Vipin Bidkar, Nair detailed his ordeal. He emphasized that despite being referred to Sassoon 21 times, he was consistently denied indoor treatment, creating ongoing distress.

Nair reiterated his need for laparoscopic hernia surgery, accusing Sassoon of disregarding the court order. His application conveyed his pain and desire for a “painless surgery.”

Lawyer Speaks Out

Advocate Vipin Bidkar, Nair’s Lawyer highlighted the challenges his client faced. Nair’s suffering escalated when he was admitted to Sassoon on July 28 due to health issues. However, he was discharged in the early hours of the same day without the anticipated surgery.

Nair’s discharge note cited Sassoon doctors’ hesitance to proceed with laparoscopic surgery due to COVID-19 concerns. In response, Bidkar sought private hospital treatment, with Nair willing to cover the required expenses.

Special sessions judge (MCOC Act) Aniruddha Thatte intervened, demanding a report on Nair’s surgical prospects and health status from Sassoon Hospital.
