The crime branch achieved a significant breakthrough on Friday by reportedly solving a murder case that had remained unsolved for three years.

This accomplishment emerged during the ongoing interrogation of gangster Nilesh Ghaywal and his associates. As a result, Ghaywal’s maternal uncle has been taken into custody in connection with the case.

Arrest of Janakiram Gaikwad and His Accomplice in the Case

The police have identified the primary suspect as Janakiram Gaikwad (48), a resident of Govandi, Mumbai, and native of Osmanabad.

Accompanying him is his associate Vishwanath Jadhav (51) from Satara, who was also apprehended.

Tragic Events Surrounding the Death of Sunil Ghare

Investigations have disclosed that on April 6, 2007, Gaikwad and Jadhav allegedly abducted Sunil Ghare (30), who hailed from Kalamboli near Panvel.

The victim was reportedly bludgeoned to death by the duo, and his lifeless body was discarded near Shirval in Satara.

Association of Maternal Uncle with Gangster Nilesh Ghaywal

Ghaywal and around 20 of his associates, including Janakiram Gaikwad, were apprehended in connection with the Dattawadi shoot-out and murder case.

The crime branch invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the suspects.

All suspects are currently under a 10-day police custody remand supervised by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Prabhakar Patil.

From Tip-Off to Arrest

Acting on a tip-off that one of Ghaywal’s relatives might have been involved in a murder, the police intensified their investigation.

Subsequently, Gaikwad, under sustained questioning, purportedly confessed to his involvement in the killing of Sunil Ghare.

Past Disputes

According to Inspector Suresh Kekane, Ghare and Gaikwad were both employed as drivers for heavy vehicles in Kalamboli.

A dispute between the two escalated, leading to Gaikwad reportedly attacking Ghare with a sharp weapon. Gaikwad was initially arrested under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC, but Ghare’s testimony shifted the course of events.

Tragic Turn: Escalation of Tensions and the Alleged Murder Plot

Ghare’s Demands and Gaikwad’s Alleged Response

Following these events, Ghare apparently demanded Rs. 50,000 from Gaikwad in exchange for favorable testimony. In response to Ghare’s repeated demands, Gaikwad, in tandem with Jadhav, allegedly plotted and executed Ghare’s murder.

Investigation Culminates in Handing Over the Case

Both suspects, Janakiram Gaikwad and Vishwanath Jadhav, are scheduled to be transferred to the Khandala police in Satara as the investigation moves forward.

The successful unraveling of this cold case showcases the relentless efforts of the investigation team, including Inspector Ram Jadhav, Sub-Inspector Gautam More, and Constables Kashinath Jagtap, Anil Kulkarni, and Santosh Sawant.
