These activities often involve impersonating law enforcement officials or creating fake online profiles to exploit unsuspecting victims back in India.
The Scale of the Problem: Numbers Paint a Grim Picture
Reports suggest a staggering number of Indians may be entangled in this web of deceit.
Estimates claim at least 5,000 individuals are currently held against their will in Cambodia, forced to participate in these criminal activities.
The financial ramifications are equally concerning – the Centre estimates the proceeds of crime generated through these scams over the past six months to be a staggering ₹500 crore.
A Collaborative Effort: Dismantling the Network
The Indian government is not standing idly by. The MEA, in collaboration with Cambodian authorities, has undertaken significant efforts to dismantle these criminal networks and rescue trapped individuals.
So far, over 250 Indians have been successfully rescued and repatriated, with 75 individuals returning in the last three months alone.
