Pune Gangland: CID Initiates Comprehensive Gangster Profile Update

By India Crime Correspondent

PUNE, 20 June, 2008

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state, headquartered in Pune, has embarked on an initiative to update the profiles of gangsters operating within Maharashtra.

This endeavor aims to facilitate vigilant monitoring of gangs engaged in crimes such as kidnapping, ransom, murder, and extortion. Notably, these profiles have not been updated since 1999.

CID’s Modus Operandi Bureau Takes Charge

The Modus Operandi Bureau (MOB) within CID has received directives to gather comprehensive information on gangsters, including those with international operations, actively functioning within the state.

This progressive step aligns with the CID’s modernization strategy, involving the transition from manual record-keeping to computerized databases for gangs and criminals.

Data Storage and Accessibility Vital for Criminal Investigations

The MOB has developed software for creating a database that can store criminal records. This technology will be accessible to investigative agencies for reference during inquiries involving crimes with similar modus operandi.

By maintaining up-to-date records, law enforcement can swiftly access timely information about any particular gangster, whenever required.

Coping with Changing Gangster Identities

Dilip Bhujbal, the Superintendent of Police for the Law and Research Department at CID, shared insights into the rationale behind this extensive record update.

He emphasized that gangsters often alter their contact details and locations, posing challenges for investigative officers attempting to locate specific individuals connected to cases.

Differentiating Active and Inactive Criminals

This comprehensive effort involves data collection on history-sheeters, inter-district criminals, inter-state criminals, and gangs engaged in property offenses, dacoities, robberies, thefts, and financial crimes.

The collected information will enable CID to classify criminals as active or non-active, thereby generating accurate profiles that encompass associates and other pertinent activities.

Organized Crime Syndicates’ Records Compiled

The MOB has taken on the task of compiling records related to organized crime syndicates.

This phase of data collection is anticipated to conclude within two months, further enhancing the CID’s comprehensive repository of criminal profiles.
