The anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the Pune police crime branch took swift action on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of six members affiliated with the Ganesh Marne gang.
These individuals are also the prime suspects in the sensational murder case of gangster Sandeep Mohol. The apprehension occurred as the suspects were reportedly attempting a dacoity at a jewelry store situated in Karve Nagar.
Key Figures in Sandeep Mohol Murder Case Found to Be Involved
The arrested suspects have been identified as Sameer Mehboob Shaikh (27), Sharad Tukaram Vitkar (26), Devidas Rama Chowgule (28), Swapnil Satish Avghade (25), Shivaji Jayram Rathod (19), and Rakesh Hiraman Chavan. All of them are residents of Karve Nagar.
Crime Branch Team Ensures Swift Apprehension of Suspects
Acting on a credible tip-off, a dedicated crime branch team, under the guidance of inspector Kishor Jadhav, swiftly apprehended the suspects.
This operation unfolded while the individuals were traveling in a car near Shabari hotel in Dahanukar Colony around 5 pm.
In the process of their arrest, law enforcement officers also seized various incriminating items, including sharp weapons, nylon rope, and chili powder, from their possession.
Suspects Linked to Array of Criminal Cases in the Area
Law enforcement officials have revealed that Sameer Shaikh and Sharad Vitkar were previously charged in connection to the Sandeep Mohol murder case.
Despite being out on bail, their involvement in this latest incident raises significant concerns.
Additionally, the investigation further exposed the criminal activities of suspects Shivaji Jayram Rathod and Rakesh Hiraman Chavan, who have a combined record of involvement in 19 cases, encompassing robberies, mobile and vehicle thefts.
The authorities have managed to recover seven mobile phones from the arrested individuals.
Crime Branch Prepares for Election-Related Challenges
Amid the approaching Lok Sabha elections, the Pune police have taken proactive measures to address potential disruptions caused by organized gangs.
With an emphasis on preventive action, the crime branch has compiled a comprehensive list of approximately 150 individuals linked to the major 16 gangs operating within the city.

Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Sangramsingh Nishandar emphasized the commitment of the police force to monitor gang members closely. The overarching objective is to thwart any attempts at misconduct or foul play during the forthcoming elections.
The authorities are not only focused on gang activity but are also scrutinizing the potential associations between political parties and local gangs.
Police Implement Sudden Checks to Ensure Safety and Fairness
In line with their pre-election preparedness, the crime branch operatives are conducting unannounced inspections within areas where organized gangs have a notable presence.
This strategy aims to address potential disruptions proactively. Recent actions taken by the police have resulted in the preventive arrest of 11 gang members over the past week.
Authorities are also diligently assessing the presence of sharp weapons and firearms within the gang circles.
