Gangsters Gajanan Marne and Nilesh Ghaywal, both placed under preventive detention at Yerawada Central Prison under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act, 1981 (MPDA), have been transferred to Nagpur and Amravati Central Prisons, respectively.

This move comes in response to concerns over potential security issues arising from housing two rival gang leaders within the same prison, according to Pune rural police officials.

Security Concerns Drive Decision to Shift Rival Gang Leaders

“The presence of two adversarial gang leaders in the same prison raises security apprehensions. Taking this into consideration, the procedure to relocate them to separate prisons was recently initiated and successfully carried out on Monday,” stated the police in an official release.

Nagpur Central Prison and Amravati Central Prison are both designated as high-security facilities within the state.

Marne and Ghaywal: Notorious Gang Leaders Under Scrutiny

Marne (54) and Ghaywal (44), prominent gang leaders, stand among the 11 organized crime factions actively operating in Pune and its environs, as per the latest updates from law enforcement.

Marne’s recent release from Taloja Central Prison followed his acquittal in the 2014 murders of two members affiliated with Ghaywal’s gang.

Release Celebration Spurs Legal Action

Marne’s supporters staged an extensive car rally from Taloja to his residence in Kothrud upon his release in February.

This event resulted in the registration of multiple offenses against Marne and his associates.

Following his arrest by Pune rural police in Satara while evading authorities, Marne was placed under preventive detention at Yerawada Prison.

Ghaywal’s History of Offenses and Detention

Ghaywal, a former associate of Marne during the early 2000s, has a record of 12 registered offenses, encompassing charges of murder, attempted murder, and extortion.

Pune District Collector’s approval led to Ghaywal’s detention under the MPDA Act, resulting in his placement at Yerawada Prison.

Rivalry and Clashes Define Their Tumultuous History

Historical records indicate that Marne and Ghaywal operated in tandem from 2000 to 2003.

However, their association eventually dissolved, leading to multiple confrontations between their respective factions.

These clashes have manifested in instances of murder and attempted assaults targeting rival gang members.
