PUNE, 1 April 2021

Nilesh Baswant, a known associate of the infamous gangster Bapu Nayar, has been successfully apprehended by the city’s crime branch after a month-long evasion. Baswant had secured bail from the Supreme Court by presenting fraudulent medical reports, falsely claiming that he was undergoing cancer treatment.

The crime branch’s meticulous efforts led to his arrest at Khed Shivapur. The operation was led by assistant commissioner of police, Surendra Deshmukh, and involved a dedicated team of law enforcement professionals.

In-Depth Operation Leads to Capture

The crime branch’s pursuit of Baswant was marked by a thorough investigation and an operation that culminated in his capture at Khed Shivapur.

The intelligence gathered by police constable Amol Pawar from crime branch (unit-1) played a crucial role.

Acting on a tip-off that Baswant would meet with his family members at Khed Shivapur, the law enforcement team, under the guidance of assistant commissioner of police Surendra Deshmukh and inspector Sunil Takawale, strategically laid the trap that eventually led to Baswant’s arrest.

Past Allegations and Forged Medical Reports

Nilesh Baswant’s criminal record is substantial, encompassing a range of serious charges including murder, attempt to murder, extortion, land grabbing, and illegal firearms possession.

His notoriety was further magnified when he secured bail through fraudulent means, using fabricated medical reports claiming cancer treatment.

This revelation came to light after the crime branch initiated a comprehensive examination of various gangsters’ cases, spurred by a rally organized by notorious gangster Gajya Marne.

Connection to Bapu Nayar Gang

Nilesh Baswant’s association with the Bapu Nayar gang has consistently drawn attention from law enforcement agencies.

He was originally arrested alongside Nayar for intimidating a family in Kondhwa and forcibly evicting them from their property in December 2015.

Following their arrest in August 2016 in Delhi, both were confined to Yerawada jail.

Baswant’s release on medical grounds for a 45-day period in April of the previous year, subsequent to which he pursued bail for cancer treatment, further highlighted his criminal activities and manipulative tactics.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The diligent efforts of the crime branch led to the booking of Baswant by the Shivajinagar police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating, forgery, and the fraudulent use of certificates.

He is set to face the legal consequences of his actions as the investigation and legal proceedings continue.

Officer’s Legacy and Service

The arrest of Nilesh Baswant marked the final day of service for senior police inspector Sunil Takawale, who retired after an esteemed 31-year career.

During his tenure, he made significant contributions to solving intricate cases, demonstrating his dedication and loyalty to the force.

His accomplishments included the resolution of sensitive cases such as advocate Umesh More’s, Maratkar’s murder, and Gautam Pashankar’s missing person case.

Takawale’s commendable service received recognition from senior officers, underscoring the invaluable role he played throughout his extensive career.
