Gajanan Marne, a history-sheeter with a notorious reputation, and his group reportedly opened fire on Nilesh Ghaywal, a fellow criminal with a police record, in a late-night attack at Dahanukar Colony, Kothrud.
This incident marks the second attempt by the Marne gang to eliminate Ghaywal. Although Ghaywal suffered a severe head injury from a sharp weapon, he is said to be in stable condition.
Recurrence of Violence: Previous Attack and Escapes
This marks the second instance where Ghaywal narrowly escaped a targeted attack by the Marne gang.
On May 13, Marne and his associates had assaulted the vehicle of another police-recorded criminal, Sameer Patil of Sangli. Their intention was to target Ghaywal, who they suspected was accompanying Patil.
However, Patil, his partner Rajshekhar Birajdar, and driver Rahul Deokar managed to escape with minor injuries.
While the Kothrud police arrested six individuals linked to this attack, Marne has remained untraceable.
Account of the Attack: Violent Encounter at Dahanukar Colony
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sangramsinh Nishandar provided insights into the recent attack.
Ghaywal and his associates were traveling in a jeep, having gone to Sahakarnagar. Upon their return, they switched to a two-wheeler at Dahanukar Colony.
It was here that Marne and his group of 10 to 12 assailants ambushed Ghaywal. During the assault, Marne fired shots at Ghaywal, while a member named Pappu Kudle attacked him with a sharp weapon.
Nishandar explained, “Ghaywal sustained a significant head injury from the sharp weapon, and his accomplice Gavde sustained a finger injury. As the jeep carrying Ghaywal’s associates arrived at the scene, Marne and his group assaulted one individual from the jeep and then fled.”
Immediate Response: Medical Attention and Investigation Underway
Following the attack, Ghaywal was swiftly taken to a private hospital in Deccan Gymkhana for treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anil Kumbhare stated that the incident was a culmination of the ongoing rivalry between Ghaywal and Marne.
Ghaywal had previously been associated with Marne and was a co-accused in two murder cases. In response, law enforcement has deployed three teams to locate the suspects involved.
Inspector Kishore Jadhav from the anti-extortion cell added, “Ghaywal has a record of five cases, including two murders, while Marne faces a total of 13 cases, involving charges of murder, extortion, and violations of the Arms Act.”
Background of Marne: Previous Legal Involvement and Externment Proposal
Marne had previously faced charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) by the Pune police. However, the court acquitted him in this case, as confirmed by Nishandar.
Notably, the Kothrud police had recently initiated proceedings to have both Marne and Ghaywal externed from certain areas. The conflict between these two criminal entities continues to be a focal point for local law enforcement.
