Gajanan Marne, a notorious criminal with a history of offenses, who allegedly carried out a gunfire attack against his arch-enemy and fellow criminal on the police’s record, Nilesh Ghaywal, at Dahanukar Colony on June 13, has surrendered before a magistrate’s court.
Marne’s Lawyer Rohan Nahar, reported that his client voluntarily turned himself in before Judicial Magistrate First Class G G Itkalkar, invoking section 437 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code. The surrender took place around 11 am, and the court has subsequently remanded Marne to magisterial custody until Thursday.
Judicial Proceedings: Next Steps After Surrender
Assistant Public Prosecutor A V Ausekar indicated that the police will present Marne before the court on Thursday to request his custody from the Yerawada Central Jail.
This procedural step is part of the ongoing legal process in the wake of Marne’s surrender.
Marne’s Evading Actions and Pending Cases
In conversation with India Crime, Senior Police Inspector Gautam Deshmukh from the Kothrud Police Station shared that Marne had been evading authorities since May 13, following his implication in an alleged shooting incident involving businessman Sandeep Patil.
While all other suspects linked to the Patil case were apprehended, Marne remained at large.
According to Deshmukh, “In the case involving Ghaywal, there remain 10 to 12 additional suspects who are still on the run. Their locations are expected to be uncovered as Marne undergoes interrogation.”
Charges Against Marne Stem from Two Distinct Attacks
Marne and his associates had targeted Patil’s vehicle on May 13 under the assumption that Ghaywal was present within.
Despite the assault, Patil, his partner Rajshekhar Birajdar, and driver Rahul Deokar escaped with minor injuries.
In the subsequent incident on June 12, Marne and his cohorts attacked Ghaywal, who was riding a two-wheeler at Dahanukar Colony.
Despite sustaining a significant head injury, Ghaywal managed to survive the assault.
Marne’s Fate Hangs in the Balance
As the legal proceedings unfold, Gajanan Marne’s surrender marks a crucial development in a series of recent events involving violent confrontations and longstanding criminal rivalries within the city.
